How to read Chinese Names
2007-11-22 18:08  al.mofcom

Do you know how to read the names of Chinese people correctly ? We take the majority -- Han nationality for example. The names of Han people usually have 3 words, like Wen Jia Bao (Chinese Prime Minister), but some of them have 2 words, like Wu Yi (Chinese Deputy Prime Minister). The surname (Wen) always stands at first in Chinese order, while the 2nd and 3rd words (Jia Bao) are together to be the given name. Usually, we put the 2 words given name together as one word as: Jiabao, and in most cases we write the surname in capital letter as: WEN Jiabao, and WU Yi. Remember never to read Mr Jiabao, but Mr WEN. It is impolite to read people's name wrongly. If you are not sure, ask first.

And now more and more Chinese people like to put the names in English order, in which the surname stands last, as: Jiabao WEN, and Xiaoping DENG.
